Facebook is the Google+ Killer
When Google+ first came out everyone was excited. We all thought, "wow, could this actually make facebook obsolete?" It didn't. And it won't. Google+ is nothing more then a bland boring copy of facebook. There isn't anything special about it at all. There's no unique thing that makes people want to keep using it. When you get there you think to yourself, "now what?"
What first got people's attention was the 'invite only' aspect of Google+. We thought that it was cool to ba apart of something that not everyone was able to access. Once we looked past that though there really wasn't anything else that was special.
Google+ is simple but yet still confusing. It doesn't seem to have a purpose other then trying to take down facebook, which isn't going to happen any time soon.
I tried Google+ once and thats all the time I needed to decide to delete my account. There is no point trying to beat facebook, especially when you don't have the capability to do so.

Facebook finally comes to the iPad
With all the apps that can be used by the iPad one very obvious one was missing, Facebook. It would seem that you would think that having Facebook on the iPad would be a no-brainer but it just wasn't done. Until now.
On October 10, 2011, Facebook finally announced their first app for the iPad. In their press release the people over at FB said that their new app will not only have the popular features of Facebook like photos and games, but that they will also be optimized for the special capabilities of the iPad.
Being both a iPad owner and a Facebook lover I am very pleased to here this news. I used to have to go through the internet to view the Facebook webpage. Now I'll be able to enjoy it using my iPad the way it was meant to be used.

Modified iPhone Detects Blood Disorders
I read an article on technologyreview.com about a new cheap lens developed at the University of California that allow a cell phone's camera to detect the shapes of cells in a blood sample. This can allow diagnosing blood conditions in places without medical infrastructure.
The system is designed to let field workers to take pictures of blood samples from their patients, and send them to doctors through the cellular network. Unlike other similar devices this one is inexpensive. This is possible because it is made out of a very simple lens made from a single ball of glass, about one millimeter in diameter and held in position with a small piece of rubber. This small size allows for a good magnification result.
One downside to this new technology is that the image is significantly distorted except for one small area directly behind the lens. This flaw is corrected however by a software that takes multiple shots of the blood sample and then combining them to create a clear image.
The system was developed using the iPhone 4 but it can be adapted to cheaper phones with lower camera quality.

Steve Jons RIP
On October 5, 2011, the world lost one of it's greatest visionaries. After a long battle with cancer, Steve Jobs passed away at the age of 56. Jobs was responsible for so many things that have become essential to our world. Without him there would be no ipods in you pocket, no iphones in your hands, and no macbooks on your lap.
He was a visionary. He changed the standards of personal technology. His co-workers always expressed how good of a person he was. I believe that with out him Apple would have never been so successful or even in existence. Jobs had the ability to push the envelope to it's limit, and then push it further. Thanks to him we can all enjoy life a little more.

design poetics: reason for success
Reason for Success
The alarm is ringing
My arm struggles to silence
My body aches from my previous day
My legs refuse to obey my mind
All I want is sleep
But I mustn’t
All I want is to stay still
But I can’t
All I want to do is quit
But I won’t
Walking now I find myself
No longer by myself
My team, my brothers, are here
Together we work
Together we bleed, sweat, and cry
Together we have the same goal
We must stand and prove
That all this work we do is not crazy
It is not stupid
For to us it makes perfect sense
We all understand that all this work
All this lack of sleep
All this pain
Is what we have to go through together
This is what we must do to win
This is what it takes to be Successful

Fahrenheit 451
The movie Fahrenheit 451 was a very strange one in my opinion. It’s story that takes place in a word where the owning and reading of books is illegal. Firemen do not put out fires instead they are in charge of hunting down the illegal books and burning them.
If the world today were with out books and literacy everything would be completely different. Education would go right down the drain. No one would have that spark that makes him or her different from everyone else. Imagination would not even be in existence. We would all be the same.
Reading and writing is what provides that spark. It allows people to escape reality. It feeds our imagination and without imagination we would all be the same boring person.
In the film books are burned because they believe that books cause people to be unhappy. They think that they upset people. In reality books do the complete opposite. They create wonderful worlds inside our heads in which we can take wonderful journeys. With out these worlds life would not seem as beautiful.

Weekly Blog 2: Pandora Redesigned
Pandora has become essential for me. I find that I use it on a daily basis, whether I'm in the library or just hanging around in my room. Its a great way to just sit back and let someone, or something, else take control of you musical needs. Today Pandora released their new design that has been in testing since July.
This update has not only changed the layout but has added a few new features. It is now easier to create and manage play lists, has improved socialization. The new update also provides more information on the artists along with lyrics, biographies, and larger album art.
A great thing about this new update is that there is no longer a 40 hour music listening limit for non premium members. Even though it seems pretty unlikely to listen to 40 hours of music at once, I still think that its pretty cool that i now have that option.

New Media E-card
I wanted to create an invitation to send out to all the family members of my team. I thought it'd be cool to receive something like this instead of just hearing about it through the players and coaches

Ive without Jobs
I found an article on latimes.com talking about Apple's head designer and how that now Steve Jobs has stepped down this designer has to make some calls without any help. The designer's name is Jonathan 'Jony' Ive, a British born designer who joined Apple in 1992. Together he and Jobs created some of the most breakthrough pieces of technology.
Before Jobs stepped down as CEO of Apple, he and Ive worked together to create incredible designs. The work the created allowed Apple to release hits for over ten years. Now that Jobs is gone Ives has the responsibility resting on his shoulders. He'll now have to make some very important decisions that have the potential to make or break the company.
I hope that Ive will be able to continue creating amazing designs. I personally love Apple products so I would hate to see the company loose its image of uniqueness. I think that Ive will be able to carry on what he and Jobs did for many years.

Patrick Hoban Intro Blog
Hello all,
My name is Patrick Hoban. I am a junior here at Alvernis University from Morristown, New Jersey. I am a member of the Alvernia Men's Lacrosse team. I am a Communications major focusing in media design and prodction I am also an art minor. I decided to sign up for this class because I think it will help to further my understanding of the media world.
I attended Morris Catholic Highschool located in Denville, New Jersey. When I graduated from there I was awarded with the MCHS Fine Arts Award. I was also voted most artistic by my classmates. I have taken a decent amount of art classes here at Alvernia and now I would like to focus on the design and production part of media.
I am interested in this kind of class because I am interested in graphic design. I hope that with my experience in art and with the help of classes like this, I will be able to get closer to my desired feild of work. I have taken some media classes before so I have some experience with media. Hopefully with this class I will be able to have a better understanding of how media works.
Thanks for reading,
Pat Hoban
